Webinar – Criminal Thinking, Substance Use Disorder, and Recovery: Evidence-Informed Practices and Panel Discussion

September 30 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Webinar – Criminal Thinking, Substance Use Disorder, and Recovery: Evidence-Informed Practices and Panel Discussion

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the substantial prison population in the United States is strongly connected to drug-related offenses. While the exact rates of inmates with substance use disorders (SUDs) is difficult to measure, some research shows that an estimated 65% percent of the United States prison population has an active SUD. In Minnesota, the statistics are even higher. According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, in 2019 a full 90% of the offenders entering Minnesota state prisons were determined to be chemically abusive or dependent.

Decades of science shows that providing comprehensive substance use treatment to criminal offenders is effective, reducing both drug use and crime after an incarcerated individual returns to the community. Treatment is critical to reducing overall crime and other drug-related societal burdens such as lost job productivity, family disintegration and a continual return to jail or prison, known as recidivism.

This webinar explores challenges in addressing substance use disorders with this population, looks at treatment approaches that have lead to positive outcomes, and, provides physiological and other scientific evidence to further support positive outcomes. You will hear directly from, and have the opportunity for Q&A with, panel members, including formerly-incarcerated individuals who are now working in the community to help improve the lives of others.
