From Statistics to Solutions: Addressing Underlying Issues of Youth Substance Use

The statistics are alarming, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, teen drug overdose deaths rose 19% from 2014 to 2015 in the United States. There were 772 drug overdose deaths among U.S. teens ages 15 to 19 in 2015, the report notes.

The From Statistics to Solutions conference creates solutions through collaboration to address youth substance use.

Panel Discussion 2018

Different ages. Different learning styles and attention spans. Different life experiences. These are just a few of the reasons that young people in their tweens, teens and twenties are less likely to succeed in traditional treatment programs. Their brains are less developed than adults, so they respond to new and different protocols. The panel discussions at From Statistics to Solutions 2018 will explore the ever-evolving ways to treat young people with substance-use disorders.

Panel One: Getting Young People to Treatment

Kids are often in denial about their substance use and they are resistant to getting help. The number one question that parents ask is how do we convince my kid they need to go to treatment. What are the steps that families can take to get their loved one into a treatment program?

Panel Two: Exploring the Options for Treatment

Out-patient. In-patient. Short-term. Long-term. Family programs. 12-step. Health realization. Faith-based. SMART. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Harm reduction. Wilderness programs. Dual diagnosis. Evidence-based. In town or out of town. The list goes on. The best treatment program is the one that works for your loved one, but with so many options available, how do you determine where to start and which will be the best fit?

Panel Three: Setting Expectations – Treatment is Just the Beginning

Addiction-treatment professionals know that treatment is just the beginning but that real work of recovery begins after the first 28 days. What do kids and their families need to know?

Panel Four: Sober Life and Relapse Prevention – The Role of Family

Early recovery is a time of discovery, of rebuilding relationships and getting one’s life back in order. For young people, it’s also about discovering new ways to have fun and learning to make healthy choices at school, in social life and at home. Stress is one of the primary triggers for relapse. This panel will talk about coping skills for young people, ways parents and family members can provide support, signs of relapse and ways to prevent it, and how to build a happy, healthy sober life as a young adult.
