26 years of addiction left me in a very dark lonely place all by myself. I’d get up in the morning and the first thing on my mind was to go get high. It impacted my job, it caused family separation and caused me to lose good friends.
There was once a misunderstanding that caused a guy to pull a gun out on me. He ended up shooting me three times. From that point, the only thing I remember was everything turned white, and it was like I was floating on a cloud.
All hope was gone because everything was lost. I was homeless and ended up sleeping at the bus stop. I would say, “Lord don’t let me wake up,” but I was too scared to kill myself when all hope was gone.
Last January, I OD’d. I was on a respirator for three days and I was in the hospital nine days after that. The church was praying for me, and that’s when I said I needed long-term treatment, and a friend of mine said Mn Adult & Teen Challenge.
Today, I’ve connected with my daughters. I just continue to ask God to allow me to be a father to my children. I see a future without prison, a future without worrying at night about the police, and it’s a whole other life for me. My girls said, “Dad, you look happy now.” It was like they can see the work of God, and that broke me and made me realize that something is really working in the program.
Mn Adult & Teen Challenge has given me so much. I’ve learned about myself about the things that caused me to use, like my mental health issues– PTSD and depression. I didn’t know anything about those issues until I came to Mn Adult & Teen Challenge.
I just want to say thank you for investing in the lives and for giving so many people like us the opportunity to change our lives. Thanks for giving us a chance.
