“I started drinking and smoking pot at 15, and then I started doing prescription pills. It grew into heroin, and then eventually meth. I was trying to feel comfortable in my own skin, and probably just wanted to fit in. It took away relationships, opportunities, jobs and good friendships with real friends.
I was getting high and crying. I felt so sad and depressed. I called out to God and begged him for a way out because the drugs weren’t even making me feel good anymore.
I started going to treatment when I was 20. I sobered up in jail and started going to Bible studies and church at the jail. I ended up really enjoying it. I decided that I wanted to rededicate my life to Jesus. I had my mentor come baptize me in jail, and then I got transferred to prison.
For me, hope entered in when I was in prison. I finally realized that I was really tired of coming back to jail and treatment. I just really want to figure this out, and I wanted to get my family and other relationships back.
I have a little over a year and a half of sobriety, and that’s the most I’ve had since I started using. At Mn Adult & Teen Challenge, it’s a good environment to grow in. The blessings are starting to come in now because I’ve been working hard, and it’s paying off.
This Christmas, I’ll be with family this year. I’m getting back to where I was before I started using, and that’s exciting. Being back with the family and being sober, I think they’re going to see that I’m doing well.
Every day I try to better myself and grow closer to God and Jesus, and to really listen and be open to what He has for me. Today when I wake up, I know my purpose is Jesus.
